Sketch 365: #56

Bonus drawing! I did this on Sunday so technically it is the last drawing of week 9 and because I didn't draw anything else yesterday, it counts toward the 365 count. I had a lot of fun with this one; I might try this style for the rest of the week.

Sketch 365: Week 9: "Through the Forest"

This "week" actually took two weeks to draw. The holidays made things busy and I ended up catching this weird migraine-inducing bug - TWICE - and I can't take any kind of painkillers so there was nothing I could do except lay down with a cold rag over my eyes all day. Also, these just took a long time to draw. I'm pretty rusty on my figure construction and I was using myself for it and because I hate self-portraiture (it's difficult because we don't see ourselves the way we can detach and see others), the faces aren't consistent. But hey, it's a sketchbook, not a final-book! I may be trying my best but I can still relax, have fun, and experiment and let it be okay to not be perfect. :)

Sketched in pencil, inked in Sharpie Pen, shaded in Prismacolor Premiere Markers, and the snow in the last frame is gesso because it was midnight and I couldn't find anything else and didn't want to wake my sister to borrow her acrylics. ;)

Sketch 365: Week 8 - kind of

"Crow Pass Toadstools" • Dec 8, 2014
Sharpie Pen & Prismacolor Premiere Markers

This week started out just fine but I was hit with inspiration for a story that ended up taking twice as long to draw as usual. And since the story went on into the following week and will act as the posting for Week 9, these little toadstools are the lone representation for Week 8. :)

Sketch 365: Week 7 - no theme

This week had no theme. The entire point of this challenge is to get myself to draw every day and I found that I was trying too hard to draw within the themes and was getting stressed out about picking a theme for this week. The themes are there IN CASE I feel too adrift with trying to decide what to draw, not a box to force myself in. They're a safety net, not a noose! And turns out I did just fine coming up with things to draw without a theme this time:

1.

2. 3.

4. 5.

6.

7.

1. "Parks Highway Igloo" - at mile 188.5 on the Parks Hwy, Alaska
2. "Brooks Lodge Flags" - in Katmai National Park & Preserve
3. "Bullet Holes in a Car" - I think these were in Kincaid Park, Anchorage, AK
4. "Ewa Beach, Oahu" - My mom lived near here
5. "Bullion Mountain" - a gold mining related shack on top of a mountain in Hatcher Pass, AK
6. "North Shore Wind Farm" - on Oahu 7. "Following the Lethe" - with my friend Trey, in the Valley of 10,000 Smokes in Katmai National Park & Preserve, Alaska.

Sketch 365: Week 6: "Macro"

Okay, this week's theme was Macro - draw stuff up close! Can you guess what they are? Some aren't as obvious…

Sketch 365: Week 5: "Birds"

Okay, THIS week I stuck to the theme this time: BIRDS! And had a lot of fun with my new Prismacolor markers.

1) 2)

3) 4)

5) 6)

7)

All drawings based on my own photos, drawn in Sharpie pen, colored with Prismacolor Premiere double-ended markers, in an 8.5" x 5.75" Sketchbook. 1) Wilson's Warbler
2) A little one-eyed ambassador owl from Bird TLC.
3) A swallow in Katmai National Park & Preserve
4) Immature Bald Eagle, Katmai National Park & Preserve
5) Magpie and Hawk Skulls
6) Willow Ptarmigan in Hatcher Pass, AK
7) Immature (l) and Adult (r) Cormorants on the Brooks River in Katmai National Park & Preserve

I actually missed an entire day this week so the cormorants were extra to make 7 drawings but I still have to tack that missed day onto the end of my 385, so consider the Cormorants a bonus drawing. :)

Sketch 365: Week 4: "Leaves"

Okay, so, my friend chose "leaves" because where she lives, there are still leaves around. Here in Alaska, they are long gone and I didn't really have any good photos of leaves that I felt like drawing, so after one leaf… Well, you can see what happened. :)

1) 2) 3) 4)

5) 6)

7)

This last one is my first attempt at using Prismacolor Premiere alcohol-based markers and I'm in love! You'll be seeing more of these. Also, again, all of these are based on my own photography and are drawn in an 8.5" x 5.75" sketchbook with Sharpie pen - no pencil sketching first!

Sketch 365: Week 3: "Reflective"

This week is short 2 sketches, one because I missed a day, the second for anonymity purposes, so there are only 5 to share. And then I'll be caught up with what I'm drawing as I am currently working on week 4. :)

1) 2)
3) 4)
5)

1) Glassware on a towel
2) Copper scoops
3) Self-portrait reflection in a metal vase
4) Self-portrait reflection in a chrome bumper of a junk car on the Matanuska River
5) Self-portrait reflection in a spoon

Sketch 365: Week 2: "Kitchen"

Sketch 365 week 2's theme was picked by Rachel: "Kitchen". Remember, the weekly themes are optional so not every sketch will necessarily fit the theme. :)

1) 2)
3) 4)
5) 6)

1) Airline lavatory
2) Black-billed magpie
3) Jars of pickled watermelon
4) Magnetic rack of kitchen knives
5) Plastic toaster

*Note there isn't a 7th post; the first day of week 2 we did the thrift store painting improvements, which counted toward a day of art.
